The Optomap Retinal Exam provides a panoramic view of the back of a person’s eye (retina). The view provided by the Optomap displays over 80% of the retina in one panoramic image. Thus it provides a far wider scope of your retina in much greater detail than other ‘retinal camera’ equipment commonly used by other high street opticians, which only capture 15% of the retina.

Assessing the health of the retina is a very essential part of an eye examination, as this is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be  seen directly. This means that, in addition to eye conditions, signs of other disorders such as hypertension, risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes can also be seen on the retina. Early detection means successful treatments can be administered, which can potentially save vision and reduce the risk of morbidity from life threatening diseases. The scan causes no discomfort, nothing touches your eye and it is recommended for all patients, including children. The digital image is captured in seconds and is immediately available for your optometrist to view.
